42 primary school teachers to be hired on short basis
Forty-two teachers at the Teacher I level will be hired on a short-term basis to address a shortfall of primary school teaching professionals at denominational schools.
This was announced by Deputy Permanent Secretary Wilson Henderson Jr at an Education Ministry media conference yesterday.
“These (educators) were drawn from the 413 persons assessed and qualified as teachers who are presently awaiting placement from the existing Order of Merit List for denominational board schools,” said Henderson Jr, who noted that they will be employed for term one only.
Back in January, the Ministry of Education embarked on a recruitment exercise to fill the vacancies for Teacher I. The hiring process began in July but suffered a setback when the interview questions were leaked online.
Guardian Media reported that the situation arose when a candidate, who had been interviewed by the Teaching Service Commission, created a social media group with other candidates and shared the questions that were asked.
Given this, the TSC decided to restart the interview process from last Monday. It is expected to be completed by September 30.
“The Ministry of Education will continue to work closely with the Teaching Service Commission to have all vacancies in Government Primary Schools filled beginning Term II of the 2024/2025 academic year,” Henderson Jr assured.
It is unclear if any action was taken against the individual suspected of leaking the questions.—(DP)
