The Central University of Venezuela -UCV- faces an unprecedented crisis due to lack of resources, The Secretary General, Corina Aristimuño, and Jesús Mendoza, President of the Federation of University Centers, denounced the critical conditions in which the institution is found.

Budget deficit and low wages

Aristimuño stressed that the budget deficit severely limits academic and administrative activities and stated that The salaries of teachers and administrative staff are extremely low, with a base salary that does not reach 20 dollars per month, while the basic basket exceeds 500 dollars.

This situation has led to a significant dropout of students and teachers, reducing student enrollment from more than 100,000 to about 24,000, report The Whistle.

“It is almost impossible to maintain a structure like this with only the passion, commitment and love of the UCEV members. Today our employees, workers and we as teachers have unworthy working conditions,” said the general secretary.

Poor services and undignified conditions

The university cafeteria, which should operate daily to serve thousands of students, can only work one week a month due to lack of supplies.

Mendoza stressed that student grants are insufficient, with amounts that barely reach 5 dollars, and pointed out that transportation does not operate at full capacity.

They demand to improve the conditions of the university

Both university leaders have made an urgent call to the authorities to improve conditions at the UCV. This requires a significant increase in the budget and salaries to guarantee an adequate educational environment.

Without these improvements, they warned, the quality of education and the integrity of the university are at serious risk.

They demanded the release of the seven UCEV members detained in the context of the post-election protests.

«We restarted activities with seven UCEV members arrested, “six students and one teacher,” Mendoza said.
