Tobago Chamber calls for increased policing on ferries

Chairman of the Tobago Business Chamber Martin George is calling for a more serious approach to crime fighting on the island, particularly as it relates to ports of entry for illegal firearms and ammunition.

George issued a video statement on Sunday hours after the island recorded its 24th murder for the year.

He said: “We of the Tobago Chamber have said repeatedly that the inflow of illegal guns and drugs in Tobago, it is too much. It has to stop. We have to start policing the (inter-island) ferries more effectively and efficiently.”

According to George, walk-in passengers are usually scanned by security before entering the ferries, however vehicles are not.

He has also issued a call for citizens on the island to share any relevant information they may know of with the authorities.

George said: “Tobago you need to save yourself before it’s too late. You need to share whatever information you have with Crime Stoppers. I remain a director to Crime Stoppers and I remain committed to the calls. If you feel you don’t wan to talk to the police, call Crime Stoppers 800-TIPS, let us solve the issue, let us put a stop to this runaway horse that is crime in Tobago.”
