Internet in Venezuela: operators aim to improve it

A dozen operators from Venezuela agreed to work together on a project to improve the quality of Internet traffic in the country without having to use the global network. This was announced by the Ministry of Science and Technology.

The government of Nicolás Maduro explained in a press release that the agreement was signed within the framework of the II International Telecommunications Fair of Venezuela. This event was attended by Cantv and private companies such as Inter, NetUno and Digitel.

«IXP (Internet Protocol Exchange) technology will allow a point-to-point connection between national operatorseliminating the dependence on international connections and ensuring that Internet traffic remains within the country,” the document explains.

According to him, this is “an effort to guarantee technological sovereignty and strengthen national telecommunications” as well as to “improve the security of communications.”

In this regard, the general director of the National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel), Jorge Márquez, considered that this project “It will mark a before and after” on the Internet in Venezuela and invited all operators to join this agreement to “further strengthen telecommunications”

One of the goals of this association is to improve fiber optic speeds, a service that they say is deployed in 99% of municipalities and that has extended the reach of the Internet, which It already reaches 65% of the population, according to official data.

“The agreement seeks not only to improve the provision of Internet service for Venezuelans, but also to facilitate connectivity, interoperability and procedures necessary to meet the needs of the various operators,” the Executive added.
