Min of National Security: Approx. 5,000 illegal firearms were seized by the TTPS from 2018-2024
Minister of National Security, Fitzgerald Hinds disclosed that almost 5,000 illegal firearms and 105,000 rounds of ammunition were seized by the police in this country from 2018 to present.
• Hinds stated that during the period January 2018 to May 2024, 4,956 illegal firearms and 104,737 rounds of ammunition were seized by the TTPS.
Giving a breakdown for the seizures in each of the years, hinds said:
In 2018: 988 illegal firearms and 17,296 rounds of ammunition were seized.
In 2019: 888 illegal firearms and 5,256 rounds of ammunition were seized.
In 2020: 755 illegal firearms and 38,452 rounds of ammunition were seized.
In 2021: 681 illegal firearms and 12,850 rounds of ammunition were seized.
In 2022: 703 illegal firearms and 11,022 rounds of ammunition were seized.
In 2023: 709 illegal firearms and 19,804 rounds of ammunition were seized.
In January to May 2024: 232 illegal firearms and 2,688 rounds of ammunition.
• When asked to provide figures for the illegal firearms and ammunition found at the country’s legal ports of entry, hinds revealed a total of 56 firearms and 5,844 rounds of ammunition were found at legal ports in the period January 2018 to May 2024.
