A group of relatives of detainees in Venezuela asked the Prosecutor’s Office this Thursday to review the cases of eight minors arrested in the context of post-election protestsbecause according to those close to them they are innocent and are being unjustly criminalized.

Through a document delivered to the Prosecutor’s Office in Caracas, seven adults detained in post-sector protests are also included, who, along with minors, are accused of serious crimes such as terrorism and instigation of hatred, which – the letter states – It is absurd and premature, since these accusations were made before an adequate and objective investigation was carried out.

In addition, The relatives expressed deep concern about the criminal proceedings being carried out against the adolescentswhile they denounced that they have not been able to appoint a defender they trust.

Irregularities in arrests in post-election protests

Theany Urbina, mother of one of the minors, stated that her 16-year-old son was detained on August 2 at the door of her house, without specifying whether he had participated in the post-election protests, and he is being accused of terrorism.

The woman, who asked for freedom for all minors, assured that a good source, which she did not reveal, told her that they want to impose a 10-year prison sentence on them.

Dionexis García said that his 17-year-old brother, detained without an arrest warrant, also on August 2, is accused of “terrorism, incitement to hatred and qualified theft.”

“The file clearly says that there is no evidence, but, through jurisprudence, the Prosecutor’s Office says that they have to go to trial to find the evidence,” García assured.

After the presidential elections on July 28, the largest opposition coalition denounced as fraudulent the official result of the elections, which declared Nicolás Maduro the winner, which triggered protests in which authorities recorded 25 deaths and arrested more than 2,400 peoplewhom the Prosecutor’s Office accuses of committing crimes.

The NGO Penal Forum counts 1,867 detainees for political reasons in Venezuela, among which there are 1,799 adults and 68 minors.
