Grindr meet-up in Laventille ends in robbery
Police are once again calling on the public to be cautious when meeting strangers on dating apps, as a Tamana man is the latest person to be robbed while using such apps.
Police said the 31-year-old Tamana man went to Thomasine Street, Laventille, at around 4.20 pm on Saturday to meet a man he was messaging using the social media dating app,
Grindr. While in the area, the man was confronted by a bandit who pushed him against a wall and stole his cellphone and $220 cash. The bandit then walked away. Besson Street Police are continuing enquiries. Officers from various divisions have repeatedly called on the public to meet strangers in well-lit public places.
There have been several reports of bandits using Grindr to lure victims into robberies and assaults. One of the most noticeable incidents of this was observed in October 2023 when a New York resident, visiting Trinidad, went to Nelson Street to meet someone he was messaging but was beaten, robbed and stripped naked.
However police arrested and charged an 18-year-old man for robbing a 26-year-old clerk. The teen reportedly used the Grindr app to lure the clerk to Nelson Street, before beating and robbing him. The teen was granted $20,000 bail.
