Crime Round-Up: Prison Officer Shot Dead In Arima, Second Murder Recorded In Tobago



The Prisons Officers’ Association is calling on the Minister of National Security to implement a phone system for prison inmates.

The call comes after a prison officer was murdered on Thursday while liming in Arima.

Thirty six year old Kendell Smith, of Greenvale Development in Cunupia, died, and 22 year old Caydel Daniel of Samaroo Village in Arima was shot in the right leg.

Smith, also known as Polo, was assigned to the Maximum Security Prison in Arouca.

Both men were shot at around 6:20pm while in the yard of a house in Samaroo Village. CCTV footage shows a gunman entering the yard and shooting before fleeing.

Both men were taken to the Arima District Hospital, where Smith died while having emergency treatment. Daniel remains warded in stable condition

General Secretary of the Prison Officers’ Association, Lester Logie, made the appeal to the National Security Minister.
