The Venezuelan Foundation for Seismological Research (Funvisis) reported that At 8:21 am this Monday, October 7, an earthquake was recorded in the town of Yaguaraparo, in the state of Sucre.which was felt in several areas of central and eastern Venezuela.

The earthquake was of magnitude 4.9 and its epicenter was 15 kilometers northeast of Yaguaraparo, in the Cajigal municipality. The depth was 2.7 kilometers, according to Funvisis.

Users on social networks reported that They felt the tremor in areas such as Ciudad Guayana, Bolívar state, Maturín, Monagas state, and even in Maracay, Aragua state.

They indicated that although the Sucre earthquake was of very short duration, it was felt quite intensely.

Earlier, the Venezuelan organization reported on another seismic movement of a lower magnitude (3.6) recorded 48 km north of Irapa in the same entity.

Funvisis has asked residents to fill out a questionnaire to help authorities measure the intensity of the earthquake in each area, and calculate its level on the Mercalli scale.

He recalled that intensity, unlike magnitude, measures the strength with which the earthquake is felt and the real damage it causes.

It is not the first earthquake to be recorded in Sucre

On August 21, 2018, Venezuela registered a 7.0 magnitude earthquake in the state of Sucre.more than 500 kilometers from Caracas, where, despite the distance, it affected some buildings, just as happened in other regions.

According to various seismographs, the earthquake was felt in a dozen countries, including Ecuador and Puerto Rico.

This has been the largest earthquake that has been recorded in the South American nation in the last decade and left no fatalities or injuries.
