Silver for Hosein at IPF Commonwealth Classic

  • Oct, Tue, 2024

T&T’s Dr Krystan Hosein continued the team’s rich form with a silver medal at the International Powerlifting Federation’s (IPF) Commonwealth and IPF Classic and Equipped Worlds Masters Powerlifting Championships in Sun City, South Africa, on Tuesday.

Hosein’s silver medal came in the 74kg Open Commonwealth Classic category, following an intense showdown with Canada’s Justin Malo for the top award.

The two athletes battled fiercely, with only 2.5kg ultimately separating them, and the competition coming down to the final deadlift attempt and sheer strategy. Hosein put on an impressive performance, completing all nine lifts—a coveted achievement in powerlifting. He finished with a 240kg squat (silver), 142.5kg (silver) benchpress, and 285kg (silver) in the deadlift.

Only on Saturday, Lois Sprang fell short of a record-breaking performance but claimed the overall gold medal in the 57kg Masters Four category in the deadlift, benchpress and squats.

The action will continue for T&T tomorrow when Rhonda Sanchez will contest the 84kg-plus Masters One division and Zahra Padia in the 84kg-plus open women (Commonwealth).
