Colombian Mateo Garcia of Raiders won the main event-30 lap open to international, elite 1, and invitational riders when the tenth Cycling on the Avenue took place on Ariapita Avenue, Woodbrook, on Wednesday night.

He recently participated in the UCI World Championship Road Race in Zurich, Switzerland, and finished as the runner-up.

Tobago International Cycling Classic (TICC) last week to Mexican Eder Fraye, Garcia turned the tables on his North American rival this time around to secure the win on debut while USA’s Lucas Bourgoyne of Pharmaco was third, followed by the local duo of Tariq Woods of Evolution Academy and Adam Alexander of Raiders, with Heatwave’s Juan Pablo Zapata in the sixth spot.

Speaking after the victory, Garcia said, “It was a very fun race, but it was also challenging, as I had some difficulty with the tight corners of the circuit, which were wet from the rain.”

Garcia was also pleased to get the win over Fraye, adding, “It was really nice to compete again against him because he is coming from a very big championship in Switzerland, and winning against him is something very positive because he is a very good rider.”

Quizzed as to if the rain affected him, Garcia replied, “Coming from the USA, where I trained, I have the experience of competing and training in many different conditions, on wet and dry roads, so coming into this race I used that experience.”

Reflecting on competing in Tobago last week, Garcia said it was a good experience for him as the race was very hard because of the hill climbs, which will serve him well in the future.”
