The opposition leader María Corina Machado thanked Portugal for “its firm support for the struggle of Venezuelans for our democracy and freedom”after officials from that country met with presidential candidate Edmundo González.

«The world understands and shares the urgency for the peaceful and orderly transition to advance in Venezuela. The reception of President-elect Edmundo González by the Prime Minister of Portugal is a very important step in our objective,” Machado said on social networks.

For its part, the Portuguese Foreign Ministry stated: “Keeping in mind the important Portuguese community in the country, the commitment to freedom, democracy and pluralism is reaffirmed and political dialogue is called”

The opponent, who had to go into exile in Spain due to pressure from the government of Nicolás Maduro, has met with important personalities from European countries to discuss the Venezuelan crisis and reiterate his complaint of irregularities in the past presidential elections.
