On Thursday 15th August 2013, the 42nd Annual Physical Training Instructors (PTI) and Education Course 2013 graduation display was held. The PTI course was initially developed in 1968 for the Trinidad and Tobago Defence Force TTDF by late Lt. Commander Ron Champion who entered the TTDF from the Royal Navy as a Physical Training Officer (PTO). This course was initially intended to train service personnel of the TTDF for the rigors of military life. Over the years it was then extended to the other services of the Ministry of National Security which include but not limited to:
•Trinidad and Tobago Police Service TTPS
•Trinidad and Tobago Prisons Service
•Trinidad and Tobago Fire service
•Civilian Conservation Corps CCC

This course is the only one of its kind in the English speaking Caribbean region. As part of governmental cooperation, ministerial and social development, the course was then broaden to include members of the armed forces of Caribbean countries and now even civilians. Since this accommodative process occurred, service men/women and civilians from the following regional territories have been trained:
•Jamaica
•Antigua and Barbuda
•Guyana
•Belize
•Barbados
•Bahamas
•St. Kitts and Nevis

The Physical Training Instructors and Education Course is a 15 module course that runs for 6 months between January to August at UWI SPEC (Sports and Physical Education Centre). The training is full time during the day beginning at 6:00am in the morning and ending at 4:00pm in the evening. It runs from Monday to Saturday. There is also a combat PTI module, which focuses especially on military training, tactics and procedures TTP’s.

The teaching is carried out by the TTDF Staff Instructors. Special modules such as CPR and first aid are carried out by internationally acclaimed organizations and hence students become registered with them. These staff instructors and student graduates have worked with many respected national athletes and teams who have represented our nation at the Pan American Games, Commonwealth Games, World Champions and Olympic Games and FIFA world cup. In 2013 recently, two PTI staff instructors from the TTDF were giving managerial skills to the Trinidad and Tobago contingent at the IAAF world championships in Russia.
