Penal Forum registers 1,674 political prisoners in Venezuela

The NGO Foro Penal reported this Friday that Venezuela has 1,674 political prisoners, the highest number in the country’s history during the 21st century.

In a post made on their social networks, they indicated some characteristics of the people they have arrested for showing opposition to the government of Nicolas Maduro.

According to the details released, 1,458 prisoners are men and 216 are women. In addition, there are 1,519 civilians in the group and 155 military personnel.

The Penal Forum said that 1,567 are adults and 107 are adolescents.

So far, 1,377 have been imprisoned and 149 have already received a sentence, but there are 1,525 who do not have a final sentence against them.

Politically motivated arrests in Venezuela have reached more than 17,000 since 2014, according to information shared by the organization.

The list was sent to the Organization of American States for verification and certification.

Several international institutions have demanded the release of all political prisoners, as they defend the right to protest and freedom of expression. However, a wave of persecution has been unleashed in the country against those who expressed ideals contrary to Chavismo.

In addition, those in prison face violations of their human rights, due to the conditions in which they are held or the treatment they receive from security officials.
