A Moruga businessman was abducted by bandits pretending to be police officers and taken to his home, where his family was tied up and robbed. The bandits, two of whom wore police tactical clothing and three in camouflage, are still at large.

Terrence Thomas, 55, was at his business, Top Shotters Furniture Shop, in St Mary’s Village, Moruga, around 9 pm on Monday with a workman when the ski mask-wearing assailants entered, claiming to be police officers. They said they had a warrant to search for arms and ammunition. He asked for their names and to see the search warrant. They became annoyed and handcuffed him.

Meanwhile outside, the bandits placed his worker in the trunk of their vehicle, a black Hyundai Elantra.

They took his wallet containing US $1,600 and US $200 and forced him into the back of his vehicle. They told Thomas they were taking him to the police station. Instead, they took him to his home in St Mary’s Village and made his wife and four children lie on the floor. The workman was also taken to the house.

They tied the hands of his wife, two older children, and the workman with tie wraps. During the ordeal, they threatened to kill Thomas. The assailants ransacked the house and stole money, mobile phones, and jewellery. They also took the DVD player that was connected to their camera system. The family was not harmed.

Thomas’s vehicle and one of the phones were recovered today. Investigations are ongoing.
