A 40-year-old garbage collector was shot dead at his home in Claxton Bay during the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Homicide investigators are exploring the possibility that the murder of Leon Leacock was a case of mistaken identity.

Guardian Media understands that Leacock and his wife, who lived on Hilltop Trace in Springvale, went to bed in their one-room home around 10 pm on Monday. Shortly after 1:15 am, they heard noises that sounded like footsteps outside. Leacock opened the front door and was shot several times. He collapsed on the bed and died.

Officers from the Homicide Bureau Region 3 are investigating.
