EMA’s air quality monitoring stations report good levels

Monitoring stations measuring ambient air quality around the country are showing GREEN and reporting GOOD Air Quality Indices (AQIs) ranging from 6 to 31 points, according to data shared by the Environmental Management Authority’s AQMIS website.

A good AQI ranges between 0 and 50 points.  At this level, everybody is safe, and people are free to enjoy outdoor activities breathing ambient air (outdoor breathable air) easily and safely.

The lowest AQI was recorded in Port of Spain, with the highest at Point Lisas.

The stations monitor the levels of atmospheric pollutants such as Carbon Monoxide (CO); Nitrogen Dioxide (NO2); Ozone (O3); Sulphur Dioxide (SO2); and Particulate matter (PM), that is microscopic matter suspended in air (aerosols) or water.  PM10 includes particles less than 10µm (microns) in diameter, while PM2.5 includes those less than 2.5µm (microns).

Low levels of atmospheric pollutants also were recorded.

According to the EMA data, at 10:00 am today:

  ●   The Port of Spain monitor station reported an AQI of 6 points.  CO = 5; NO2 = 6; O3= 4; and SO2 = 0.

  ●   The Arima monitor station reported an AQI of 15 points.  CO = 4; O3 = 8; PM-10 = 12; PM-2.5 = 15; and SO2 = 0

  ●   The San Fernando monitor station reported an AQI of 29 points.  NO2 = 8; O3 = 9; PM-10 = 17; PM-2.5 = 29; and SO2 = 2

  ●   The Point Lisas monitor station reported an AQI of 31 points.  CO = 3; NO2 = 9; O3 = 6; PM-10 = 14; and PM-2.5 = 3.
