Minister in the Ministry of Works and Transport Richie Sookhai has given the assurance that Government will complete the infrastructure projects in the borough of Chaguanas that are now causing traffic congestion.
Sookhai made the promise following a short function to distribute school supplies in Enterprise, Chaguanas, on Saturday, as he kicked off pre-election activities in the constituency of Chaguanas East.
Sookhai said the expansion of the Uriah Butler Highway was progressing but delays are being caused by the weather and the availability of aggregates.
“This should be completed by the end of the year. We are asking the public to bear with us for a bit. I am assuring the public when it’s done we will have relief for commuters, especially those heading from north to south.”
He said the ministry was working hard towards completing the Perseverance Road River Bridge and the Bridel Road Bridge in Chaguanas before the start of the new school term.
Today, Sookhai faces the People’s National Movement (PNM) screening committee at Balisier House, Port-of-Spain. Sookhai was the only candidate put forward by the executive of Chaguanas East for that seat.
Addressing this, he said, “I feel humbled to be given the opportunity to put forward myself. Again, it’s about serving the people, serving the community, it doesn’t end there and we intend to change shoes fast because we would be walking the length and breadth of this constituency before this General Election.”
Sookhai said he wants to develop various programmes through Chaguanas East geared towards everyone.
“We are going through the demographics and looking at the concerns and looking at what would affect people in all age groups and how we can roll out various programmes.”
Sookhai said he also wants to roll out homework centres. However, he said parents/guardians are concerned because of the high rate of crime and are sceptical about letting their children participate in such activity. He said he has a plan to address this.
“We intend to be able to curb that by working with the authorities to bring that level of safety and security to the area.”
Sookhai said Government was also working rapidly to get the community centre at Africa Recreation Ground in Enterprise completed so they can roll out some programmes there.
