Man killed, another wounded in Carapichaima drive-by

A drive-by shooting in Carapichaima on Friday ended in the death of a 46-year-old man and the wounding of another.

Police said Shawn Newton was speaking with his brother and a third man on a bench on Mandela Drive, off Orange Field Road, at around 7.45 pm when a bronze van drove near them.

Two gunmen got out of the car and shot at the trio, hitting Newton several times, killing him. Newton’s 42-year-old brother was shot in his left arm. A taxi driver who was dropping off a passenger on Mandela Drive, at the time later told police that his car was struck several times by stray bullets during the attack. Their attackers got back in the van and drove off.

Freeport police were called in with a district medical officer who declared Newton dead. Police took the wounded man to hospital where he remained up to Saturday morning. Investigators found 10, 5.56 rounds of ammunition at the scene.

Region III Homicide investigators are continuing enquiries.
