They ask to investigate the rectors of the National Electoral Council

The Popular Democratic Front (FDP), a coalition of dissident Chavismo, showed this Friday in favor of investigating the rectors of the National Electoral Council (CNE) of Venezuela, to determine their “criminal and administrative responsibility”, after the institution will not publish the detailed results of the July 28 presidential elections.

In a press conference, former deputy Yul Jabour said – on behalf of the bloc – that the country was waiting for what the electoral regulations guaranteed: the disaggregated results of the presidential elections, in which the CNE proclaimed the winner Nicolas Madurowhose reelection is not recognized by many countries.

“We consider that an investigation must be opened against all rectors, principals and substitutes”remarked the former deputy.

Likewise, he denounced that on Thursday the Parliament – controlled by Chavismo – “denied” the right to speak to Óscar Figuera, general secretary of the Communist Party of Venezuela (PCV) – intervened by the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ) -, who was going to request an administrative and criminal investigation against the rectors of the CNE.

Why do they ask the rectors of the CNE to investigate?

Jabour recalled that the CNE’s “situation of omission” – by not publishing the disaggregated results – triggered popular protests and “the entire repressive apparatus of the State” against the protesters, whom the Prosecutor’s Office accuses of generating “violence” and “vandalism.”

After the elections, more than 2,400 people were arrested, some in the context of the protests, after the largest opposition coalition denounced the result of the presidential elections as “fraudulent” and assured that the winner was its candidate, Edmundo González Urrutia, and not Maduro, as later validated by the Electoral Chamber of the TSJ.

In August, former opposition candidate Enrique Márquez – who was supported in the presidential elections by FDP organizations – asked the Prosecutor’s Office to investigate the CNE rectors for “conspiracy”, whom he accused of “destroying the foundations of the republic” by “violating “the popular sovereignty contained in the vote.”

Although there has been no response to this request, the TSJ – made up of judges sympathetic to Chavismo – last week refused to review the ruling that validated the electoral result, in response to another request from Márquez.
