T&T football icons Yorke, King among top candidates for head coach role
Port of Spain, Trinidad – Trinidad and Tobago’s football community awaits a major decision as legendary footballer Dwight Yorke and current interim coach Derek King have been shortlisted for the prestigious head coaching position of the Soca Warriors.
The Trinidad and Tobago Football Association (TTFA) has narrowed the list to five candidates, after reviewing over 400 applications from across the globe.
Yorke, who earned international acclaim playing for Manchester United and 74 caps for Trinidad and Tobago from 1989 to 2009, is considered a front-runner for the role. At 52 years old, Yorke most recently served as head coach of Australian club Macarthur FC, and also boasts experience from his time playing with clubs like Aston Villa, Blackburn Rovers, Birmingham City, and Sunderland. His leadership and football acumen have made him a top choice as Trinidad and Tobago seek to revive their fortunes on the international stage.
A strong contender
Derek King, who took the reins as interim head coach in August following the dismissal of Angus Eve, is also a strong contender. Despite a challenging CONCACAF Nations League campaign that saw only one victory, King’s tactical approach and familiarity with the squad have earned him praise. The 43-year-old former national player has been a vital figure in T&T football, having held various coaching roles over the years, and his recent efforts in guiding the team through two FIFA international windows have solidified his place on the shortlist.
Kieron Edwards, president of the TTFA, expressed optimism about the selection process and the level of competition among the candidates.

“We are excited to have both Dwight Yorke and Derek King among our final candidates,” Edwards said. “They represent two key figures who have made significant contributions to Trinidad and Tobago football. Derek, in particular, has shown potential during his interim stint, especially in the match against Honduras. As for Dwight, his football pedigree speaks for itself.”
A final decision soon
The TTFA expects to make a final decision by the end of the month. Edwards added that while Yorke and King are two prominent names, other international candidates remain in contention, with discussions currently taking place between agents and the association.
“We’re confident that by the end of this process, we’ll have a coach capable of leading Trinidad and Tobago back to success,” Edwards said.
The official announcement of the new head coach is anticipated in the coming weeks.
