Maduro: “Borrell aims his rifles and cannons at Venezuela”

Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro said on Monday that the High Representative of the European Union (EU) for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, “is aiming his rifles and cannons” at the Caribbean country, after this call for more transparency on the controversial re-election of the Chavista leader in the elections of July 28.

“Josep Borrell supports the Palestinian Holocaust, the Gaza massacre, he is complicit in the Gaza massacre, and now he is aiming his rifles and cannons at Venezuela,” Maduro said during a virtual summit with heads of state of the Bolivarian Alliance for the Peoples of Our America (ALBA).

The president accused Borrell and the EU of being subservient to the United States, whose government has applied numerous international sanctions to Venezuela in recent years, especially against senior Chavista officials who Washington accuses of undermining democracy or violating human rights in the country.

“Borrell and the EU are not only dragging their feet in relation to Venezuela. Josep Borrell is instigating and supporting an open war against Russia from Ukraine,” continued Maduro, who has expressed on numerous occasions his support for Vladimir Putin in the invasion of Ukraine.

“I wish the EU governments had the independence that we, the modest governments of Latin America and the Caribbean in ALBA, have. I wish they had even a hair’s breadth of dignity,” he added.

Borrell demands transparency in results

On Saturday, Venezuela accused Borrell of supporting a “fascist coup” in the country, after he published what Caracas calls a “dirty statement” in which he claims that the “necessary public evidence” has not been provided to declare Nicolás Maduro re-elected president, as announced by the National Electoral Council (CNE) on July 28, and subsequently ratified by the Supreme Court of Justice (TSJ).

In a statement on behalf of the EUBorrell said that “only complete and independently verifiable results will be accepted and recognized,” referring to the disaggregated data on the votes that were to be released by the CNE to confirm Maduro’s victory.

Despite the announced victory of the Chavista leader, the main opposition coalition – the Democratic Unitary Platform (PUD) – insists on the victory of its standard-bearer, Edmundo González Urrutia, based on “83.5% of the minutes” that it claims to have obtained through witnesses and table members during the election day.
