Siparia councillor who resigned from UNC joins PNM, accused of betrayal
Betrayal!
Siparia Mayor Doodnath Mayrhoo says it is a betrayal that his former UNC colleague, Jason Ali, crossed the floor to the PNM after he won his seat on a UNC ticket.
Ali, who serves the Siparia West/Fyzabad district, says he was never given a bribe by the PNM, nor did he betray the UNC party.
According to Ali, it was the UNC who betrayed him by treated him badly after he contested the party’s internal elections with Rushton Paray’s United Patriotic slate. Ali had also hoped to be Siparia’s first Mayor but was passed over by the UNC because of inexperience.
Ali, once a strong critic of the PNM, said he did not vacate his seat as it is too close to the elections and the area would have been unrepresented had he vacated it.
Other councillors—including Victor Roberts, Javed Mohammed, Sherryann Choonoo-Lasse and Ramona Victor—also expressed disappointment with Ali’s decision.
