Man killed by fuel truck in Marabella
A 69-year-old man was killed by a fuel delivery truck while attempting to cross the road in Marabella yesterday morning. Kent Mitchell, also known as Yankee, died at the scene.
The incident occurred shortly before 9 am and was captured on CCTV footage. The truck stopped along Union Road to allow a car travelling in the opposite direction to enter Amarsingh Street. Mitchell had just walked out of Amarsingh Street. As the car turned into the street, Mitchell began crossing in front of the truck. But police said the truck driver did not see Mitchell and ran over him.
As he tried to hold back the tears, Mitchell’s brother Simeon Outram, a PH driver, said he had seen his sibling moments before by the Marabella market. He was passing in his car when he saw the accident, and he got an uncanny feeling that the deceased person was his brother. He stopped to investigate and saw his brother’s body on the road.
Outram said companies using heavy trucks should ensure that two people operate the truck, the driver and another person.
“The driver said he could not see him. These trucks are supposed to have two people in the vehicle, so if the driver cannot see, the other man will see.”
Outram said his brother migrated to the United States at age 12 and lived with his father. He served in the US Army. However, he said about 15 years ago he was deported after he got into a fight.
Mitchell’s children live abroad. Outram said Mitchell was staying at a relative’s home in Reform Village, but he “liked to be on his own,” so he would be back and forth.
Due to the circumstances, he admitted that his brother began using drugs. However, he said Mitchell had always dreamed that one day he would return to the United States to be reunited with his family. Marabella police are investigating.–SASCHA WILSON
