Air Canada is returning to this country, the Airports Authority of Trinidad and Tobago has announced.
Commencing May 1, 2025, Air Canada will resume scheduled flights between Toronto’s Pearson International Airport (YYZ) and Piarco International Airport (POS), “offering travellers increased options and reinforcing the link between Trinidad and Tobago and Canada”, the Authority said in a media release yesterday.
Mere months after announcing its return to the route in 2023, the airline said it was suspending the service in August last year.
Yesterday, executive vice president Revenue and Network Planning at Air Canada Mark Galardo stated, “Air Canada is very pleased to be returning to Port of Spain starting in Summer 2025 as the only Canadian carrier serving Trinidad and Tobago. Our year-round service reflects the extensive family and business ties between our two countries and will support the islands’ tourist industry. From our global Toronto hub, customers will be able to connect easily onward to more than 30 destinations in Canada or around the world.”
He added: “The new four-day-a-week service is timed for local preferences and will be operated with one of our new, Boeing 737 Max aircraft, which offers two cabins of service and seatback entertainment for every customer.”
General manager of the Airports Authority Hayden Newton expressed enthusiasm for the development.
“The return of Air Canada is a significant step forward in our efforts to expand travel options and enhance connectivity for Trinidad and Tobago. This move by Air Canada increases capacity on this route and strengthens our position as a key hub in the Caribbean. We look forward to working closely with Air Canada to ensure a seamless, safe, and enjoyable travel experience for all passengers,” he said. “Within recent times, several airlines have added new routes or expanded their services to Trinidad and Tobago, strengthening connectivity between this nation and many traditional, new and exciting international destinations. Passenger throughput through our nation’s airports have shown significant recovery post Covid-19. The return to this route by Air Canada demonstrates a strong demand from passengers and underscores the importance of Trinidad and Tobago as a key market.”
He stated: “This resumed service supports the ongoing development of Trinidad and Tobago’s tourism, trade, and cultural exchange. It enables travellers to have increased opportunities to connect with Canada, the second largest source market to Trinidad and Tobago, which is home to a vibrant Trinbagonian diaspora, and enhances prospects for business and tourism interests.”
