Saab says they will continue “reviewing” cases of political prisoners
Tarek William Saab, Attorney General, spoke about the process of releasing political prisoners related to the post-election protests, which has resulted in the release of dozens of people since the early hours of Saturday, November 16.
The attorney general of the Nicolás Maduro administration confirmed that he met with parents and relatives of political prisoners. In addition, he expressed his willingness to continue reviewing cases.
“We received them this last week and we are going to continue receiving them throughout Venezuela, me from Caracas and all the judges nationwide,” Saab said in an interview with journalist Margarita Oropeza, in the Venevisión’s Opening Doors program.
He explained that the Public Ministry is still reviewing the files of the detainees, which was recently requested by Maduro.
«Whoever has been investigated is deprived, goes to trial and may end up convicted; or the person who has previously been investigated and tried, could be the subject of a file review. We are doing it«Saab commented.
How many political prisoners have been released?
The NGO Foro Penal confirmed this Sunday the release of 131 people linked to the protests against the official result of the presidential elections of July 28.
“We have registered and verified 131 releases carried out by review of measures requested by the Public Ministry (…) We understand that for the most part there is no full freedom and the judicial processes continue,” the NGO indicated in a publication in X.
He explained that those released will have to go to court this Monday to have alternative measures imposed for their deprivation of liberty.
Yesterday, Attorney General Tarek William Saab assured that between Friday afternoon and Saturday, 225 measures of freedom were “granted and executed” to people detained after protests against the official result that proclaimed Nicolás Maduro as the winner of the presidential elections of the July 28.
He spoke about María Corina and Edmundo González
Saab rejected the protests and stated that opposition leaders Edmundo González and María Corina Machado, whom he blames for the demonstrations, are in exile.
He added: “Those who called for this violence are happy, fugitives from justice in golden exile. They are outside the country living with everything they stole during the campaign, both the gentleman and the lady, escaped from the country living ostentatiously.”
However, it is known that only Edmundo González is protected in Spain. Machado is in hiding in Venezuela.
