Italy recognizes Edmundo González as elected president

Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy, recognized this Wednesday, November 20, the opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia as elected president of Venezuela and reaffirmed his support for a democratic and peaceful transition in the country.

His statements were given during a press conference with the president of Argentina, Javier Milei, at the Casa Rosada.

Meloni assured that González, who went into exile in Spain, won the presidential election on July 28. The prime minister condemned what she called “the brutal repression carried out by the Chavista regime” of Nicolás Maduro.

“We do not recognize, as we have already said, Maduro’s proclaimed victory after very non-transparent elections. “We continue to condemn the brutal repression of the regime that led to the death of dozens of protesters, the arbitrary detention of thousands of political opponents, and the accusation and exile of the presidential candidate of the democratic opposition,” he stated.

Meloni reiterated that the international community must raise its voice so that the will expressed by Venezuelans on July 28 is respected.

“We intend to do it with even lighter tones and together with the European Union “We work for a democratic and peaceful transition in Venezuela so that the preference expressed by the Venezuelan people for the elected president González Urrutia and the legitimate aspirations for freedom and democracy finally come true,” he said.
