Celeste Méndez Delgado, graduated from the Simón Bolívar University (USB) with a Bachelor’s degree in Physics, received the 2024 Science Student Award in the Undergraduate category, awarded by the Academy of Physical, Mathematical and Natural Sciences of Venezuela (Acfiman).

Méndez Delgado, from Valencia, Carabobo state, stood out for his exceptional academic performance, creativity, reasoning and independence. Despite the challenges imposed by the covid-19 pandemicmanaged to graduate on time with an academic index of 4.69/5.0 and achieved the honorable mention Cum Laude, one of the highest in the history of USB since its first promotion.

His degree project indicates the Acfimanreceived approval with an Outstanding mention. In this work he demonstrated that metamagnetic anomalies are not an exclusive phenomenon of the Ising model, but also occur in more complex models.

“My work shows that metamagnetic anomalies are not a particular phenomenon of the Ising model, but rather appear to be a general characteristic of magnetic models when they are subjected to these conditions,” said Méndez Delgado.

He specified that the findings of his thesis can help to better understand statistical physics phenomena such as dynamic phase transitions. In particular, they are expected to have applications on mass storage devices.

“His degree project not only met the academic requirements, but also contributed new perspectives to the field,” highlighted his tutor, Gloria Buendía, professor in the Department of Physics and Dean of Research and Development at USB.

Buendía, who nominated Méndez Delgado for recognition, stated: “From the beginning she stood out as an exceptional student. “His thirst for learning and his ability to do so many things simultaneously with a high level of excellence is simply amazing.”

During her time at USB, the student not only shone academically, but also participated in online courses on computing, languages, and scientific writing.

“I always looked for opportunities to expand my knowledge. I firmly believe that continuing education is key for any scientist,” says the winner of the 2024 Science Student Award.

Annual award highlights young talent in Venezuelan sciences

With the recognition, Celeste Méndez Delgado positions herself as a promise for the future of physics in Venezuela.

The Acfiman Science Student Award is awarded annually to recognize academic-scientific performance and stimulate the scientific development of young science students in Venezuela.

This award considers the merit and excellence of the candidates as essential values. The delivery ceremony takes place in a special session of the Academy on November 21, University Student Day in Venezuela.
