Venezuela postulates the arepa as intangible cultural heritage of humanity

The government of Venezuela signed the file titled The Venezuelan arepa: preparation, consumption and identity in the family and public space to nominate the food for selection as intangible cultural heritage of humanity before UNESCOThe Minister of Culture, Ernesto Villegas, reported this Friday.

“The wooden box that contains the file through which Venezuela postulates the Venezuelan arepa as intangible cultural heritage of humanity is already sealed; this container contains the file prepared for months by the Center for Cultural Diversity,” Villegas indicated in a published video. on Instagram.

The director of the Cultural Diversity Center, Benito Yradi, indicated that they worked with communities from all regions of the country, which 40 types of corn were registered in Venezuela.

He explained that the file contains photographic and audiovisual records, as well as documents from the National Institute of Nutrition.

“The arepa is the first food of all Venezuelans, it is ours, it is Venezuelan,” he said.

Yradi reported that a response from UNESCO on this nomination is expected for 2027.

The arepa has had a World Day since 2012, which is celebrated on the second Saturday of September, with the aim of promoting the integration of Venezuelans abroad and the discussion around their cultures and traditions.

In March 2023, Venezuela applied to UNESCO joropo music, typical of the Llanos region of the country, to enter the list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity, Villegas announced then.
