Woman killed crossing PBR; soldier questioned
A soldier has been questioned and released following a fatal road traffic accident on Saturday, after he struck and killed a pensioner as she was crossing the Priority Bus Route (PBR), Barataria.
The 25-year-old Private of Claxton Bay, who is assigned to Camp Ogden, St James, reportedly did not have permission to be on the PBR when he struck Doreen Charles, 77, of Moraldo Street, Maraval.
The accident occurred around 8.30 am on Saturday.
Police said the soldier had been driving his black Hyundai Accent west along the PBR when upon reaching the pedestrian crossing at Third Avenue, he overtook a 25-seater maxi-taxi, which was stationary on the left side of the roadway.
Charles was at the time crossing in front of the maxi from the southern side of the road to the northern side when she was struck.
The police were contacted and Charles was taken to the Eric Williams Medical Sciences Complex, Mt Hope, where she succumbed to her injuries a short while later.
Officers said Charles lived alone at Maraval and recently began exhibiting signs of senility.
She was also known to frequent the home of a female relative at Seventh Street, Barataria.
The soldier was accompanied to the police station by Public Information Officer, TTPS Corporate Communications Unit, Insp Michelle Lewis—who reportedly gave officers a purse containing a National Identification Card and a Massy Stores Card in the name of the deceased.
The soldier was questioned and later issued a fixed penalty notice for Breach of PBR, and was also warned of potential prosecution.
