Barbados whip Trinidad and Tobago U-17s after batting collapse

  • Aug, Mon, 2024

Trinidad and Tobago under-17 cricketers fell to a heavy eight-wicket loss to Barbados in their second match of the 2024 Cricket West Indies (CWI) Rising Stars Men’s Under-17 Two-day Championships at Inshan Ali Park in Preysal on August 18.

After a brilliant effort from captain Brendon Boodoo (five for 37) helped to bowl out Barbados for just 96 in their first innings in response to the hosys 121, TT came into the second and final day’s play with a 38-run lead after ending day one on 13 without loss to start their second innings.

Unfortunately for TT, their second-innings performance with the bat was far from ideal as they were bowled out for a paltry score of 106 in 40.2 overs – 15 fewer than their first innings total.

At one stage, TT were reeling at 53 for seven, with Jakeem Pollard (three for 21) helping to dismantle the hosts’ top- and middle-order with the wickets of opener Darrius Batoosingh (12), Boodoo (one) and Jayden Kent, who was bowled for a golden duck.

TT got a timely rearguard partnership between Aaron Basant (32) and Aaidan Racha (20) for the eighth wicket, with the pair putting on 48 runs to give their team a fighting chance. The eighth-wicket partnership and TT’s innings was swiftly wrapped up, though, with Barbados captain Joshua Dorne only needing an eight-ball spell to clean up the tail. Dorne finished with remarkable figures of three wickets for no runs.

Set a target of 132 for victory, Barbados had a shaky start when opener Damarko Wiggins fell to Racha for a golden duck in the very first over of the chase.

TT had a lengthy wait before they could make further inroads in the visitors’ top order, as Dorne (38) and opening batsman Zachary Carter (86 not out off 98 balls) took the game away from the hosts with a brilliant 117-run partnership for the second wicket.

The left-handed Carter was in a punishing mood, hitting three fours and a whopping nine sixes in his eventual game-sealing knock. Boodoo dismissed his opposite number with Barbados’ score on 118, but new batsman Micah Greenidge struck him for a pair of boundaries in his subsequent over to cap the visiting team’s facile victory.

At the National Cricket Centre, Balmain, Couva, Guyana put on a ruthless batting display in their second innings as they raced to a 96-run victory target inside eight overs to topple the Leeward Islands by ten wickets. Opening batsman and captain Jonathan van Lange scored 65 not out off just 31 balls to steer his team to victory after Guyana’s Golcharran Chulai claimed impressive match figures of ten for 62.

Meanwhile, at Gilbert Park in California, Jamaica held on for a draw against the Windward Islands after being set a target of 204 for victory.

Joel Durand led the Windwards attack in the second innings with figures of three for 38, but he and his team couldn’t quite get over the line as the Jamaicans closed day two on 177 for nine – eking out a draw in a match which saw them posting just 44 in their first innings.

From 10 am at the NCC on August 21, the Windwards will aim for their second win in the tourney when they take on TT who are still chasing their first win after drawing with Guyana in their first game.
