Met office monitoring tropical wave east of Lesser Antilles

  • Aug, Sat, 2024

The Trinidad and Tobago Meteorological Service (TTMS) is tracking a tropical wave near 47W, about 1,600 km east of the Southern Windward Islands.

The TTMS says there is a low chance (near 0%) of development in the next two days, but a medium chance (50%) over the next week. Officials advise the wave could turn into a tropical depression as it moves westward at 10-15 knots, possibly reaching the Lesser Antilles by Monday and continuing into the Caribbean Sea later next week.

Tobago and, to a lesser extent, Trinidad might experience moderate to heavy showers, thunderstorms, gusty winds over 55 km/h, and 25-50 mm of rain. This could lead to street and flash flooding.

Currently, there are no watches or warnings in effect for Trinidad and Tobago. The TTMS will provide an update by midday tomorrow, September 1, 2024, or sooner if needed.
