Opposition MP wants more support for students
“If we are to see better results in the CSEC and CAPE exams, then students need to be given more institutional support.”
This is the view of Tabaquite MP and Shadow Education Minister, Anita Haynes-Alleyne, who says the COVID-19 pandemic is having long lasting effects on primary school students, as well as in secondary schools.
“[There must be] More emphasis on the student support services, and a greater emphasis on guidance counsellors within the schools,” MP Haynes-Alleyne asserts.
“Additionally, we now see the Vacation Revision Programme, which seeks to help students who’ve already written the SEA and who have not got the marks required to confidently enter the secondary school system—but you’re looking at the Standard Five level. We also need to start looking at reintroducing homework centres, and reintroducing additional help,” the Tabaquite MP explained.
The Caribbean Examinations Council (CXC) has reported that 94 per cent of pupils failed to get five subjects or more, in this year’s CSEC exams.
