It has been a month since the arrest of photojournalist Deysi Peña, accused of the alleged crimes of terrorism, incitement to hatred and obstruction of public roads. According to the complaints, she has not been allowed a private defense in these 30 days. She was presented on August 7 via telematics before the 2nd Judge of Terrorism Control, Carlos Liendo by the 47th Prosecutor’s Office.

Peña has been detained since Monday, August 5, at the Tomás Lander Police Center in Ocumare del Tuy, Miranda state, more than three hours away from her place of residence.

Peña was arrested on August 2 in the morning at the Los Nuevos Teques gas station, Guaicaipuro municipality, by officers of the Miranda Police, who emphasized that the arrest was supposedly due to photographic material of the post-election demonstrations, even though freedom of expression is a fundamental right established in the Constitution.

“It should be noted that Peña has an impeccable track record of more than 20 years in the Mirandina social media, in addition, the material indicated from the protests of July 29, 2024 was in compliance with the provisions of article 58 of the National Constitution, hence a campaign called #InformarNoEsDelito is being carried out at the national level,” says a press release on the case.
