Sinking TTCG Pirogue Due To ‘Gross Negligence’

Four officers of the Trinidad and Tobago Coast Guard have been penalised after gross negligence led to the sinking of a pirogue in February.

National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds was questioned by the Opposition on what led to the sinking of the 28-foot vessel at the San Fernando Yacht Club on February 6th. Mr. Hinds noted that the vessel was undergoing maintenance work following which the boat’s drain plug was removed and replaced.

However, he says four officers have been found guilty of gross negligence after the plug was not properly fitted.

Mr. Hinds added that the officers appeared before their Commanding Officer for disciplinary proceedings and certain penalties were imposed.

Mr. Hinds said after proper maintenance, the vessel returned to servicing the Coast Guard.
