Arima man charged with Laventille teen’s murder

A 46-year-old man from Malabar, Arima, was due to appear in court today, charged with the murder of 19-year-old Khaleeq Thomas last Tuesday (August 13, 2024)

A statement from the Police Service reports that Rodney Mitchel was arrested on August 13, 2024.  On Monday (August 19, 2024), Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions, Mrs. Honore-Paul gave advice to charge him with murder, in connection with the death of Khaleeq Thomas, of Picton Road, Dan Kelly, Laventille.

According to reports, around 2:35 pm on Tuesday (August 13, 2024), police officers responded to a report of a stabbing near the Queen’s Park Savannah, opposite the National Academy for the Performing Arts (NAPA).

Upon arrival at the scene, the officers found a man lying in a pool of blood, showing signs of life. He was taken to the Port of Spain General Hospital but was pronounced dead at 2:44 pm. The deceased was later identified by his father.

Police received information that subsequently led to the arrest of a suspect in connection with the wounding incident. However, while at the Port of Spain General Hospital for medical treatment, the suspect was formally cautioned regarding the murder of the deceased. He was then taken to the Woodbrook Police Station, where he was securely detained and subsequently charged.

The investigation was supervised by Ag ASP Ramjag, Ag Insp Teeluck and Ag Insp Ramsumair, all of the Homicide Bureau of Investigations Region One.
