Northern, Caribs reach Marcus Minshall knockout final

Trinidad Northern Rugby Football Club (RFC) will defend its Marcus Minshall Knockout Cup title against perennial rivals Caribs in next weekend’s final after both teams eased into the final on Saturday afternoon.

Northern made light work of Defence Force winning the second of two semifinals on the Caribs pitch in the Queen’s Park Savannah, Port-of-Spain, 43-12.

Caribs earned their spot with a 33-20 victory over Harvard in the other match on the Royalians’ pitch to stay on course for a League and Cup double.

Richard Staglon led the Caribs’ charge, registering two tries with one each coming from Geddess Phillip, Karlon Alexander, and Jonathan Taylor. Reinaldo Bermudez made five of four conversions.

For Harvard Joseph Quashie, Shakeel Dyte, and Keroy Wilson all scored tries. Nigel Ballington pitched in with five points of his own.

Caribs are a win away from retaining the league title and could clinch it against Royalians next weekend at the same venue. Northern is third with a game in hand in the race for the league title and will be hoping for an upset when the two meet.

Last year, Northern beat Royalians 19-15 in a keenly contested knockout final.
