Maduro’s statements were made during his weekly program. They come after the opposition leader Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia He took political asylum in Spain following political persecution following the presidential elections on July 28, where his victory has been claimed.

Despite Maduro’s statement and Gonzalez’s exile, Maria Corina Machado, leader of the Venezuelan opposition, said that the opposition leadership maintains its agenda and strategy to insist on the return of democracy in the country.

“We will continue to move forward until the entire world recognizes Edmundo Gozález Urrutia as president-elect, who will be sworn in as president of the republic on January 10, 2025,” said the opposition leader.

“If Edmundo’s departure changes anything, from any perspective, it is that it may increase the risk for me. I don’t know, but in any case I have decided to remain in Venezuela and support the fight from here while he does so from abroad,” he reiterated.
