In Sucre, 10 suicides were recorded between January and August

Between January and August 2024, 10 suicides were recorded in the state of Sucre according to a report published by Victims Monitor and Runrunes.

According to the publication, this figure is lower than that recorded in the same period in 2023, although there is still concern because there were two suicides in August alone.

One of these cases is that of José Miguel Salazar Narváez, 19 years old, who committed suicide in a depressive episode. Relatives found him in a room in Punta Colorada, Araya, on August 18.

Days later, on August 22, Juan Antonio Mata Patiño, 61, was found by workers at a mechanic’s shop after suffering mechanical asphyxiation.

The victims were men between the ages of 16 and 20 (three), 41 and 49 (four) and 54 and 61 (three), detailed the Victims Monitor and Runrunes.

He mentioned the case of a 10-year-old girl who took her own life in her home by ingesting a toxic substance and that of a 15-year-old teenager who jumped into the void from the El Sisal towers in Barquisimeto. In the same city, a 12-year-old teenager who had suffered sexual abuse committed suicide.

Gustavo Páez, coordinator of the NGO in Mérida, explained that this year the socioeconomic conditions and the humanitarian emergency in the country would be impacting the mental health of citizens. He also said that a series of triggers have been observed in children and young people that act on various levels, such as excessive consumption of alcohol and drugs, the onset of depression or a manifestation of mental disorder.

“Suicide is also related to socioeconomic crises, deteriorated social context, dysfunctional and unstructured families, romantic disappointments, rejection of diverse sexual orientation, failure at school and university and situations of harassment in environments, mainly educational, a phenomenon known as bullying,” added the expert.
