3 recipients of Korean scholarships to study global tourism, psychology

Three young women from Trinidad and Tobago will embark on an exciting chapter in their academic careers come September, as they pursue postgraduate studies at top universities in South Korea.

A statement issued by the Embassy of the Republic of Korea reports that Steffi Roberts, Tisha Teekasingh and Celeste Narine are the recipients of the Postgraduate Global Korea Scholarship for 2024.

“Starting this September, the GKS program will enable Ms. Roberts to further her studies in the field of Psychology at Inje University,” the Embassy’s release revealed, “as well as Ms. Teekasingh and Ms. Narine to pursue their passion in Global Tourism at Kyunghee University.”

Deputy Head of Mission of the Korean Embassy, Mr. Young June Kim, met with the GKS scholars yesterday (August 20, 2024), at ‘You and I’ Korean restaurant.  In addition to extending his congratulations, Deputy Kim shared valuable insights and guidance for their long stay in Korea.  He also expressed his confidence in them as cultural ambassadors to Korea.

“Their time and experience of studying in Korea will undoubtedly open new avenues for their respective careers and contribute towards international academic exchange and cooperation,” the Embassy’s release said.

Prior to commencing their postgraduate courses, the GKS scholars will receive Korean language training, to ensure their successful pursuit of their studies at the Korean universities.

“The language training will take between 6 months to 1 year, giving the scholars a chance to observe, appreciate, and embrace Korean culture, complementing their student life with a rich and comprehensive experience during their stay,” the Embassy explained.

“This initial phase serves as a notable stepping stone, enabling them to encompass the Korean lifestyle and adapt to fresh surroundings, thus forming a robust foundation for their academic endeavours.”

The GKS, known as the Global Korea Scholarship, is provided by the National Institute for International Education (NIIED) in Korea and presents an exceptional opportunity for talented students globally to engage in undergraduate or graduate programs in Korea, accompanied by a year-long immersive Korean language study.

The GKS program offers scholarships to international students who wish to pursue their undergraduate and graduate degrees at Korean tertiary educational institutions.

The scholarship is offered every year and serves as key catalyst in promoting academic interactions between the Republic of Korea and the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago.

“These ties are crucial in shaping forward-looking collaboration and mutually advantageous exchanges between our two countries in the coming years,” the Embassy said.
