Government assistance has been provided to 800 people whose homes were damaged by floods and other natural disasters.

Social Development and National Services Minister Donna Cox yesterday said approximately $3.5 million has been spent this year to help citizens with rewiring, plumbing and other small repairs.

At a grant distribution ceremony at City Hall, Port-of-Spain, Cox said $2,338,226.50 was spent on minor house repairs, $570,111.80 for sanitary plumbing assistance and $496,459.22 in house wiring assistance for a total of $3,404,797.52 spent.

“We are pleased to announce that 224 applications or 800 persons have benefited from our house repair programme. The cost is approximately $3.5 million for this year so far,” Cox said.

“A significant portion of this funding will go towards victims of disasters, some of who are sitting with us here today. Some persons here had their roofs blown off, others experienced infrastructure damage to their homes due to flooding and earthquakes.

“This Home Repair Grant distribution ceremony is a testament to our dedication to ensuring that every citizen has a safe, secure, and dignified living environment.”

The grants are funded through the ministry’s National Social Development Programme, which also targets the poor and vulnerable groups in society including senior citizens, persons with disabilities, the unemployed, victims of domestic violence and single-parent households.
