We will continue working in the EU for the recognition of Edmundo González

After the The Spanish Congress on Wednesday asked the government of Pedro Sánchez to recognize Edmundo González Urrutia as president of Venezuelathe leader of the Spanish right (PP), the opposition Alberto Núñez Feijóo, assured that The Popular Party will continue working, this time in the European Union (EU), so that the international community accepts what it considers to be the real results of the presidential elections of July 28..

“We will continue working. Given that the Popular Party is the majority party within the European Union, we will continue working for the recognition of what Venezuelans have voted for. That the election result is recognized,” Núñez Feijóo told reporters.

Núñez Feijóo criticizes the PSOE’s position on Venezuela

The Spanish Congress of Deputies, at the request of the right-wing opposition, adopted with 177 votes to 164 a proposal calling on the left-wing government to recognise González Urrutia’s victory over Nicolás Maduro in the elections in Venezuela. However, Pedro Sánchez’s government is not obliged to accept it.

“We are sending a very clear message from here in favour of democracy, in favour of freedoms, of the rule of law and in favour of recognising the election results. Do not be afraid. In the end, the truth will prevail over lies,”

Regarding the PSOE’s negative vote, Núñez Feijóo said that “it was a mistake and I think this is a black mark in the history of the socialist party.”

“It makes no sense for the socialist party to deny the result of the polls and It makes less sense that, being one of the most important countries in the European Union, Spain should not lead the electoral recognition of last July 28. “I think the president of the government has some interest that the Spanish people do not share and that it is absolutely unfair because it goes against Venezuelan interests,” he added.

PP MP Cayetana Álvarez de Toledo also considered that “what happened in Congress today is very important and must pave the way for other parliaments and nations, starting with the Spanish government, to accept the truth and the vote of the Venezuelans.”

He added: “We must respect the sovereignty of the Venezuelan people who, in very difficult circumstances, decided to follow the path of democracy and freedom. We will work to ensure that Venezuela is finally free.”

What did the leader of the PP say about Edmundo González’s exile in Spain?

Núñez Feijóo denounced on Monday that the winner with the departure of Edmundo González Urrutia from Venezuela is Nicolás Maduro because “the democratic politician who won the elections had to leave and the dictator who lost them remains in power and controls the government.”

Along these lines, he commented that the Venezuelan president will be celebrating that the person who won the elections, referring to González Urrutia, has left Venezuela “with the mediation of, it seems, (José Luis Rodríguez) Zapatero (former head of the Spanish Executive) and the government of Pedro Sánchez,” both from the Socialist Party.

He added that, if he were the head of the Executive, Spain would also have granted asylum to González Urrutia, but with the treatment of an elected president, and would have joined the International Criminal Court in requesting Maduro’s arrest.
