In the text, Edmundo González thanked all the Spanish political forces that are fighting for the recognition of the will of the Venezuelans expressed at the voting tables on July 28. “My gratitude to the Congress of Deputies for the recognition of my victory in the last Venezuelan elections.”

Pedro Sánchez received Edmundo González at the Moncloa Palace, one day after Congress urged his government to recognize him as the winner of the presidential elections in Venezuela.

Sources at Moncloa confirmed to Efe that the meeting took place behind closed doors. However, images were published on social media in which Sánchez can be seen walking and talking with González Urrutia and his daughter Carolina González in the gardens of the presidential residence.

Will Spain recognise Edmundo González as president?

Despite the fact that the Spanish Congress has urged the government to recognise Edmundo González as the winner of the elections on 28 July, the Executive is not considering such action and is referring to the common position held by the European Union partners, who continue to demand the electoral records of the elections.

The standard-bearer of the Democratic Unitary Platform arrived in Madrid on Sunday on a Spanish Air Force plane to request political asylum after denouncing fraud in the presidential elections in Venezuela.

In a statement released on his X network profile after arriving in Spain, González Urrutia “deeply” thanked the Spanish government for welcoming him, a gratitude that was reiterated by his daughter Carolina when reading a message from her father during a rally held on Wednesday in front of Congress, when the PP’s initiative to recognize the victory of the anti-Chavez leader was being debated.
