The head of the Spanish Executive, Pedro Sánchez, met this Thursday at the Moncloa Palace with the Venezuelan opposition leader Edmundo González Urrutia, a day after the Congress, with the vote against the socialists, will urge the government to recognize him as the winner of his country’s elections.

Moncloa sources have confirmed to EFE that the meeting, behind closed doors, was held today, after Sánchez returned yesterday Wednesday from his official trip to China.

In the images distributed by Moncloa, Sánchez is seen walking and talking with Edmundo González and his daughter Carolina González in the gardens of the presidential residence.

The meeting between Sánchez and Edmundo González also takes place after the president of the Venezuelan Parliament, the official Jorge Rodríguez, asked for urgent approval of a resolution so that the government of Nicolás Maduro to immediately break all relations with Spain.

Edmundo Gonzalez arrived in Madrid

Anti-Chavez candidate González Urrutia arrived in Madrid on Sunday on a Spanish Air Force plane, after spending a few days at the Spanish ambassador’s residence in Caracas.

The Spanish government facilitated his departure from Venezuela without submitting to conditions or compensations from the Maduro regimeaccording to Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares.

However, the Executive is not considering recognising the opposition’s victory on 28 July, as requested by Congress, and is referring to the common position held by the European Union partners, who continue to demand the electoral records of the elections.

Congress called for recognition of González Urrutia as the legitimate winner of the presidential elections in July thanks to the key support of the Basque nationalists, who distanced themselves from the investiture bloc and voted alongside the conservative Popular Party, the driving force behind the initiative, and the far-right Vox.

The Spanish government and the PSOE accuse the PP of only seeking “division” and insist on its commitment to maintaining the unity of the community partners.

In a statement released on his X network profile after arriving in Spain, González Urrutia “deeply” thanked the Spanish government for welcoming him, a gratitude that was reiterated by his daughter Carolina when she read a message from her father during a rally held on Wednesday in front of Congress, when the PP’s initiative to recognize the victory of the anti-Chavez leader was being debated.
