FRIDAY 5TH AUGUST 2022 – CRIME WATCH LIVE

HIGHLIGHTS FROM TODAY’S SHOW:

The TTPS will offer a reward of $100,000 for information that can lead to the arrest and prosecution of the persons responsible for the malicious damage to telecommunications infrastructure in the country.

• Commissioner Jacob added that the police have investigated 192 reports of copper thefts and 139 persons were arrested and charged.

• Two scrap yard dealers, one in Trinidad and another in Tobago, were also charged but such criminality continued and police believed such incidents are beyond simple incidents of larceny.

• Jacob said last week when he visited the Thompson Exchange at Cross Crossing in San Fernando where thieves accessed an underground network, he observed that though copper wires were stolen, the suspects also appeared to have deliberately cut the fiber optic cables which they left behind.

• Jacob added that a security threat occurred where citizens were unable to contact the police within the South and South Western Divisions because of the malicious damage done at the Thompson Exchange.

Public Utilities Minister Marvin Gonzales has stated that tstt has spent more than $15m for the year conducting restoration works as a result of its cables being cut and stolen.

• Speaking at a press briefing at the minister of national security alongside National Security Minister Fitzgerald hinds and acting Commissioner of police Mc Donald Jacob, earlier today, Gonzales said tstt has suffered 361 fiber breaks across T&T for the years thus far.

• He added that 96% of the restoration works were completed and 14 projects were ongoing.

On the issue of copper thieves hitting wasa installations and Booster Stations, Gonzales said, 120 of the authority’s customers, particularly in the north and central regions, have had their water supplies impacted because of acts of vandalism and destruction at WASA sites.

• WASA, he added, has spent $4m on restoration works.

• Regarding the recent theft at the California Booster Station, Gonzales said, the authority would have to fork out approximately $400,000 to conduct repairs which would take approximately 2-3 weeks before the facility is back up and running.

• Areas such as Siparia, Penal, Point Fortin and environs, Mayaro and environs, Basta Hall, Tortuga, Phoenix Park, Diamond Vale and Princes Town have been impacted because of acts of vandalism on WASA’S infrastructure.
