Two Cunupia women are dead following a fire at Persad Avenue, Mon Plasir, Chaguanas, yesterday.

Dead are Angela Ali, 53, and her daughter-in-law Ambika Ali, 30.

Police said the fire engulfed their home and had gutted it just before noon.

The women’s bodies were found by firefighters in the front part of the house.

Speaking after the tragedy, Majeeda Ali-Jodhan, Angela’s sister-in-law, said her brother Nizam Ali, who is Angela’s husband, was on the first day of his vacation and had stepped out just before the fire started.

Ali-Jodhan said the family was preparing to celebrate the 32nd birthday of Angela’s elder son Javid, the husband of Ambika, when tragedy struck.

Jeremy, 29, the younger son of Angela, who was also at home when the fire started, escaped the blaze.

Ambika conducted baking services from her home while Angela has a furniture store in St James. Ali is an Amco employee.

Nizam was too distraught to talk to the media.

However, Darling Bisnath, 71, Angela’s mother, said she was in disbelief over the incident.

She broke down when undertakers were moving the bodies, saying, “I am not well, I can’t talk.”

Several relatives also had to be consoled when undertakers left the site with the burnt remains of the two women.

Other relatives said they had a bad dream, which they felt was a premonition something was about to happen within the family, and some said the date, Friday 13th, was a bad and fateful day.

Villagers described the family as quiet people.

Nadia Kangal, a co-worker of Nizam, described the family as very down to earth, caring people.

“Nizam goes out of his way to help anyone in need,” Kangal said, adding several of his other co-workers planned to visit him later on in the evening.

Firefighters initially left the scene after 3 pm but had to return shortly when the fire reignited. They finally left the site at 5.45 pm.

Members of the Fire Service will return to the scene today to determine the cause of the fire.

Officers from the Cunupia Police Station are investigating.
