This Friday afternoon, the radio station Victoria 103.9 FM announced on the social network X that after a visit from the National Telecommunications Commission (Conatel) was ordered to cease broadcasting. In a message to listeners, the station thanked them for their support during its time on air.

«Dear radio listeners and followers of #VictoriaFMtoday #13Septwe received a visit from Conatel with an order to cease our broadcasts through resolution N GST-RS00899, which declares the “extinction of the sound broadcasting license,” the station shared.

For more than two decades, Victoria FM has been dedicated to reporting on the main roads in the state of Aragua, such as the Autopista Regional del Centro, in support of public service.

The union on the Conatel measure

The National College of Journalists (CNP) in the state of Aragua stated: «RGoodbye Victoria FM It not only represents one more negative statistic for the end of a media outlet in the country, it is the closure of a space in which information fulfilled a public service purpose for the citizen who travels on the roads of #Aragua».

The National Union of Press Workers (SNTP) shared other details regarding Conatel’s measure. “The radio station’s management assured that the Telecommunications Commission argued that they did not submit documentation requested in previous years, but the media insists that they are up to date. Around 15 workers are unemployed after the closure,” it said.

The station joins the number of media outlets closed in Venezuela.

The NGO Espacio Público reported at the end of May that at least 14 radio stations had been closed in five months.
