[UPDATED] Woman, 18, dies in accident on Hochoy highway
Kaylee Poonan. –
AN 18-year-old woman died in a car accident on the evening of August 20 on the Sir Solomon Hochoy Highway.
Kaylee Poonan was the passenger driven by her boyfriend, 19, in his recently acquired red Mitsubishi Lancer when, around 6.30 pm, near Papouri, he lost control of the car and slammed into a lightpole.
Police said Poonan died on the spot. Her boyfriend was taken to hospital.
On August 19 Poonan tagged her boyfriend in pictures on social media of a woman holding on to handles inside a vehicle with the caption: “No joke, mans drive like if I have extra lives.”
Social media reports claimed Poonan was pregnant at the time of the accident, but speaking with Newsday at her home at Peterloo Street, Friendship Village, Golconda on August 21, her relatives firmly denied this claim.
They also declined to comment further on the incident, saying: “What happened already happen, we can’t change that. It was an accident.”
Shortly after the accident, videos on social media also showed the red Lancer apparently speeding on public roads. Although it was claimed the car was being driven by Poonan’s boyfriend, Newsday could not independently verify this. Neither the vehicle’s number plate nor the driver was visible in the video.
When Newsday visited the driver’s Debe home around midday August 21, his grandmother said he was still warded at hospital, but could not give an update on his condition. That, she said, would have to come from his parents, who were at the hospital at the time.
