Romany, Shukla defend Ventures 5K titles
Nicholas Romany and Samantha Shukla defended their titles as the respective men’s and women’s champions in the Venture Credit Union 5K in Couva on Sunday morning.
Romany, 30, held off Kenya’s Alex Ekesa to emerge the overall winner in a time of 14 minutes and 37 seconds as the top two men finished within a second of each other in the race, which started and ended at the Couva branch of the Credit Union. Ekesa, 41, crossed second in 14.38. In third place was 18-year-old Tafari Waldron with 14.53.
Filling out the top five spots overall were Collin Pereira (15.43) and Donnell Francis (16.05), respectively, in the annual event, which saw some 1,258 participants complete the race.
Shukla was a comfortable winner in the women’s category, clocking 19.33 to place 29th overall. The 33-year-old finished ahead of Aniqah Bailey, 16, who was second with 20.14 and 39th overall. April Francis clocked 20.32 to place third among the women and 39th overall.
Eleven-year-old Chennai Moore (20.52) and Teresa Otero (21.16) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the event themed “Unity.”.
Veteran roadrunner Curtis Cox was the top finisher in the 50-59 category. The 56-year-old clocked 18.19 to place 15th in the men’s category and overall. In the same age group in the women’s category, Juliet John-Sambrano was first with a time of 21.38.
