Spain asks Venezuela for information on its detained citizens

The Spanish government demanded this Monday from Venezuela «official and verified information» on the two Spaniards arrested in the country along with other foreigners accused of being linked to an alleged plot against Nicolás Maduro.

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs “continues to demand official and verified information from the Venezuelan authorities on the arrest of two Spaniards, as well as clarification of the charges against them,” the ministry said in a statement.

«The Spanish Embassy in Caracas is in contact with the Venezuelan Foreign Ministry, to which it has informed that “It will exercise diplomatic and consular protection of its nationals,” the ministry continued.

The Venezuelan government announced on Saturday the arrest of three US citizens, two Spaniards and a Czech for being linked to an alleged plot to attack Maduro and “destabilize” the country.

Tensions between Venezuela and Spain

In response, Venezuela recalled its ambassador in Madrid and summoned the Spanish ambassador in Caracas to protest the questioning of Maduro’s re-election.
